There are a number of avenues you can take to become a medical transcriptionist. Some people get postsecondary training while others get associate degrees or certificates. Medical transcription classes can be taken online or in classroom settings. The coursework generally is in anatomy, medical terminology and legal issues that concern health care documentation. Having good computer skills and being well versed in grammar and the English language is very helpful as well.
A number of medical transcriptionists spend some time learning on the job. There is no formal accreditation that is required for medical transcription. There is an Approval Committee for Certificate Programs which was set up by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity. The American Health Information Management Association has a voluntary accreditation for medical transcription programs. Transcriptionists who are looking to be certified can complete an ACCP approved program.
Registered Medical Transcriptionists and Certified Medical Transcriptionist are voluntary designations. If you have graduated from a medical transcription education program and you have less than 2 years of acute care you can become a registered RMT. In order to get the RMT credential you need to pass the AHDL level registered medical transcription exam.
If you want to get the CMT designation you will need at least 2 years of acute care experience. In order to get this experience you will have to work in multiple specialty surgery areas. This will give you experience using various formats, report and dictation types. A certification test must also be taken.
As an RMT or CMT you will need to keep up with the rapid changes in the medical field. That means you will need to take continuing education credits every 3 years to be recertified. Staying on top of the medical transcription and any changes that occur will help you remain a respected and sought after transcriptionist.
After graduating from an ACCP approved program you will be able to take part in the Registered Apprenticeship Program. This is a program that is sponsored by the Medical Transcription Industry Association through the U.S. Department of Labor. Earning RMT credentials will make you more attractive in the medical transcription field. If you are eager to get on the job learning and related technical instruction the Registered Apprenticeship program offers these perks to qualified medical transcriptionists that are getting into the field.
The benefits of getting good strong medical transcription training are endless. You will enhance your understanding of medical terminology and gain a greater understanding of good English grammar and punctuation skills. Take the time to become more comfortable with computers as well. You will spend a good deal of your time on the computer so learn as much as you can about word processing software. While you are training for your new career as a medical transcriptionist fine tune your listening skills.
When you are working at home advancement of your career is largely based on how much effort you put into it. Home based businesses are most effective when you have good discipline.
