Home Based Business Checklist

A home based business is a great journey to embark on. While it can be a complicated task, having a handy checklist will help keep you on track. If you begin with a good working plan your home based business will get off the ground without a hitch.
The first step in starting a home based business is creating a business plan. It is essential that you have a plan to detail what you want to business to be and where you want it to go. Set up goals you intend to reach and when you want to hit those milestones. How much money do you have to invest in the business? What type of schedule will you be able to work? What is your launch date? All of these things should be figured out before you actually put things into motion.
What type of business are you starting? Will your home based business be a sole proprietorship or a partnership? Will you go for the gusto and organize a corporation? This all depends on the money you have to put up and the type of business you will be starting. Make sure that you are realistic.
The laws regarding home based businesses vary from state to state. You will need to find out what type of license or reseller certificate you need to get. Contact your local and state government to find out what is required so you can be sure to stay within the limits of the law.
When you are checking for what licenses and certificates you need you should also check with your local zoning commission. Find out if you can legally have a home based business. There are a few cities where such a venture is prohibited.
The type of insurance that is needed for your home based business may vary. Do not rely solely on home owners insurance because it may not cover your business. Find specific polices that deal with home based businesses. If you will be transporting goods or seeing clients in your home make sure you have insurance to cover liability.
One you have handled the logistics and legal issues, you can start putting together your office. Organize your office space in a way that allows you to work comfortably and keep things neat. A home based business needs to be run with as few distractions as possible. Setting up an office close to a common area of the house may not be wise. Find a place that is spacious and secluded enough for you to get some privacy when you need to work.
By the equipment you need when you need it, but be sure you have the necessary items on hand form the beginning. You do not need to buy a bunch of equipment that you won’t be using for a while. However, if you are planning on getting off to a good start, you will need to have to necessary equipment for the clients that you service from the very start.
